Death toll from fireworks factory explosion rises to 20Death toll from fireworks factory explosion rises to 20

China -- The death toll from an explosion at a fireworks factory has climbed to 20, with four still missing and another 153 injured, local authorities said.

It killed nine of the factory's 51 workers and injured 35, while four are still unaccounted for. Eight other people were killed and 35 injured when the explosion hit a neighbouring a wood factory.

The blast also killed two pedestrians and injured 83 residents near the factory. Altogether, 14 people were seriously injured, and one of them has been transferred to a hospital.

The ensuing fire was largely brought under control after a helicopter dumped water on the blaze.

The fire had been largely extinguished but smoke still surrounds the area and 23 small fires continue burning within a 309-meter radius of the factory.

The situation is viewed as severe and new accidents might occur, as there are three timber mills near the fireworks factory.

Fire trucks hosed water onto other warehouses at the fireworks factory to prevent more explosions. But some think that could be risky...Click here for more details 26/08/2010
