Smoke
alarm at oil rig
Norway -- Emergency authorities in Norway prepared for
action when the oil rig “Polar Pioneer” today reported
about smoke development in one of its engines. The rig
currently operates at the “Tornerose” field in the
Barents Sea.
The Sea Traffic Central in Vardø, Norway, got the
emergency warning from the rig at 9 am today, Finnmark
Dagblad reports. Preparedness authorities subsequently
prepared for action.
At 9.25 am, the situation was considered stable and no
further emergency measures were taken.
The Polar Pioneer is a Sonat/Hitachi design
semi-submersible drilling unit, capable of operating in
harsh environments and water depths up to 1,650 feet.
The rig has on several occasions been used in the
Barents Sea
