Pemex evacuates workers due to fire on Mexico’s offshore oil platform
Mexico’s state-run oil company Pemex has evacuated workers from offshore oil platform Zaap-E in the Bay of Campeche after a fire in a machine room, caused by a short-circuit from one of the aggregates.
The company said that the incident will not affect production.
The Zaap E platform is part of the Ku Maloob Zaap field located in shallow waters at the southern edge of the Gulf of Mexico. It was being installed at the time and was not operational when the incident occurred.
“The field has the capacity to produce around 860,000 barrels of crude per day.”
A spokesman for Pemex said no injuries occurred and 97 workers were evacuated from the platform.

The company brought the fire under control and reported no spill in oil.
Pemex said an investigation to determine the root cause of the fire would begin soon.
Dragados Offshore owns and operates the offshore Zaap-E rig, which is chartered by Pemex for operations in fields.
The latest incident follows Pemex’s reporting of a fire on the offshore Akal-H satellite platform in Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico in June 2015. The fire occurred due to a leakage of oil and gas when three workers were performing routine inspections.
