China – Two Missing After Tanker Explosion Off Zhanjiang Port

singapore tanker blastTwo crew members are missing after an explosion in a Chinese products tanker off South China’s Zhanjiang port, local authorities said.

Around 09.40hrs local time yesterday, the 2013-built 4,577dwt products tanker Run Guang 9, which was unloaded, broke loose after a cargo hold caught fire and exploded off Zhanjiang port in Guangdong province, the Zhanjiang Maritime Safety Administration said yesterday.

The products tanker was en route from Zhuhai port to Zhanjiang port, and accident took place about 13 km from the coast.

Among the 14 crew members on board the vessel, two were still unaccounted for as of yesterday evening. The other 12 crew members were rescued, with three of them injured, hospitalised and without life-threatening injuries.

At 14.30hrs local time yesterday, the fire on the vessel was extinguished. More than ten vessels were deployed in the rescue operations, according to the Zhanjiang Maritime Safety Administration.
At 15.00hrs local time yesterday, three officers from the Zhanjiang Maritime Safety Administration boarded the damaged vessel and brought it back under control.

The rescuers are still searching for the missing crew members around the scene of the accident.
