Colombia – Explosion in Mine Kills Three

r-LA-PRECIOSA-MINE-large570BOGOTA – Three miners died and one was injured in a blast at a mine near Angelopolis, in northwestern Colombia, local press reports said.

The explosion took place due to methane gas accumulation and there were 85 people working in the mine at the time, the authorities told local media Monday.

After the explosion, the three fatal victims – Fabian Velasquez, Juan David Granados and Hernan Muriel – as well as a fourth person who was hurt, were trapped inside and the rescue teams could only reach them after several hours.

Colombia’s National Mining Agency has taken charge of the investigation into the blast.
