Nigeria – Offshore Helicopter Crashes Killing Four Two Missing

A helicopter carrying 10 offshore oil workers has crashed on its return journey, killing at least four.

The Bristow operated Sikorsky S-76C+ was returning from a offshore drilling rig, off the Nigerian coast, when according to eye whiteness’ “nosedived into the lagoon”, around 1330 local time on Wednesday 12th.

The crash site was in the heavily populated Oworonshoki area of the Nigerian capital, Lagos, around 5 miles (8km) from its final destination of Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The S-76 came down in a local lagoon, hugely reducing the death toll of both those on board and those in the surrounding area.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority have released a statement saying, “There were twelve people on board at the time of the accident, ten passengers, two crew members. Four bodies have been recovered. Six people survived, and two people are missing.”

The search for the two missing persons is ongoing, however, its still unclear at this time whether they are air crew or passengers. 

Nationalities of the four deceased are yet be released, whilst the relevant authorities contact the families.

Regional Director Africa of Bristow, Duncan Moore, said: “Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident. We are committing our full resources to help. Our highest priority is to take care of our crew and clients and their family members and provide them with any assistance needed,”
