Pemex Refinery Blast Injures At Least Eight
A blaze at Mexico’s largest refinery on Tuesday injured at least eight people and forced some staff to be evacuated from the Pemex operated facility.
According to Reuters, state-owned Pemex said eight people were being treated for minor injuries after a fire at the Salina Cruz refinery while the Red Cross said nine people were injured during the accident.
A company spokesman told Reuters the blaze was brought under control and that the 330,000 barrel per day refinery was operating normally expect for an alkylation unit.
No environmental impact has been reported.
The refinery, located in the state of Oaxaca, primarily produces fuel for domestic consumption.
The accident came just days after Pemex issued a report saying that it reduced its accident rate by 33 percent over the last year.
The company said its accident rate dropped to 0.38 accidents per million man-hours worked, falling below the average accident rate reported by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers.
However, an investigation by Reuters published in July alleges the company included man hours worked by office staff to reduce its overall accident rate.
