Philipines – Chemical Leak Injures 31
Davao City – Thirty one residents, including 10 children, in Lasang, Davao City were downed when liquid chlorine from the tank valve of a company leaked at around 2:30 a.m. yesterday.
The company which authorities here identified as Jedaric Chemicals Co. Incorporated is located in Sitio Licanan, Barangay Lasang.
Of the total number of people hit by the leak, 10 were children while four were members of the Philippine Army belonging to Task Force Davao (TFD).
The storage tank that leaked was situated near the TFD checkpoint in Lasang, the point of entry to the city from Davao del Norte and other provinces.
Early morning Monday, residents complained of smelling foul odor, which turned out to be the chemical leak, as many started to feel difficulty in breathing, reports said.
Central 911 personnel and volunteers immediately rushed to the area to provide first aid treatment to the victims before they were brought to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SMPC).
Dr. Leopoldo Vega, Director of SMPC said that their facility admitted 31 victims complaining of nausea, vomiting and loose bowel movement.
According to Vega, some were released after treatment, even as health authorities are still determining the kind of chemical that downed the victims.
Health authorities here are still investigating the case and have not yet released any official report as of press time.
