Venezuela’s PDVSA announces major oil spill
Venezuela’s state oil company PDVSA said on November 7 that an east of Caracas had polluted drinking water supplies to a number of communities over a radius of 50 kilometres. The leak occurred in a pipeline in the locality of Santa Clara and the group said it had launched an operation to supply drinking water and protect local ecosystems.
Reuters quoted an opposition parliamentarian from the state saying the leak occurred in the five days to November 6 and that 25,000 barrels had spilled, causing an ecological disaster.
The parliamentarian blamed poor maintenance for the spill, and said security forces were blocking access to the area.
