China – Shipping Tanker Catches Fire Near Shanghai – 1 Dead 4 Injured
A China Shipping tanker carrying 29,000 tonnes of diesel caught fire on Monday afternoon in waters near Shanghai, with one seafarer killed and four injured.
The Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration received the incident report at 1618 hrs local time, when the 45,740 dwt Ye Chi, owned by China Shipping Development, was about 8 nm southwest of the Dayan Shan Island, China.
The vessel, with 25 crew members, had just left the Shanghai port on its way to Singapore.
The fire killed one seafarer and injured four, including one suffering serious burns.
Rescuers arrived about three hours after the report and took the wounded to hospital.
The ship dropped anchor at 0518 hrs Tuesday about 1 nm south of Dayang Shan Island, after the fire was put out by the rescuers.
SMSD said the incident is now under investigation.
